Our clinical laboratory was established in 1998 and provides services in all fields of laboratory medicine including clinical chemistry, haematology, immunology, microbiology and molecular pathology. It also has an active interest in research and is a major contributor of a number of research programs conducted at the Mendel Center for Biomedical Sciences. Since 2005 the laboratory has re-located into Iasis Hospital, Paphos.

Check up:

  1. Basic check up: this includes Full Blood Count, Urinalysis, Glucose, Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, urea, and uric acid
  2. Full check up: in addition to the basic check up, it includes liver function tests, kidney function tests, iron status (women) and prostate specific antigen (PSA, men)
  3. Extended check up: patients suffering from a specific condition may elect to have their special tests run in parallel with their check up.

Special Tests

  1. Liver: it includes (a) liver enzymes and other substances produced by the liver (ALP, SGPT, SGOT, GGT, bilirubin, protein, albumin, globulin). (b) Detection of hepatitis viruses (c) Liver cancer markers
  2. Heart: it includes (a) factors used to determine the risk of coronary heart disease (lipid profile) (b) heart enzymes and electrolytes (CPK, LDH, phosphate) (c) Genetic factors predisposing to thrombosis (Factor V Leiden etc).
  3. Thyroid: hormones T3, T4 and TSH.
  4. Cancer:
    1. determination of established cancer markers:
    2. research into novel cancer markers.
    3. DNA banking of genomic DNA from familial cancer cases and screening for mutations in genes predisposing to carcinogenesis.
  5. Kidney-Blood pressure: Urine analysis, creatinine and electrolytes, molecular genetic testing for inherited nephropathies (e.g. polycystic kidney disease)
  6. Infectious Diseases: tests for viruses (AIDS, hepatitis, herpes, etc), bacteria (salmonella, chlamydia, tuberculosis etc) and other microorganisms (Candida etc) include classical tests (culture, antibodies) and modern molecular DNA technology (see below).
  7. Legal Medical Services:
    1. Tests required for immigrants in Cyprus (AIDS, hepatitis, syphilis)
    2. Tests required for those working with food (restaurants etc)
    3. Thalassaemia trait test for obtaining marriage certificate in Cyprus
    4. Drugs of abuse screening tests
    5. Paternity Test and
    6. Other forensic tests in criminal cases using DNA technology and provision of consultancy services to lawers and others involved.
  8. Molecular Pathology: a wide range of tests based on DNA technology involving genetic diseases, genetic services, molecular microbiology and forensics.
